Zen Master Seung Sahn
Founding Teacher

Zen Master Seung Sahn is the founding teacher of the Kwan Um School of Zen. The 78th patriarch in his line of dharma transmission in the Korean order of Chogye Buddhism, he has founded Zen centers all over the world. Zen Master Seung Sahn has given dharma transmission to about a dozen Zen Masters, and inka (authorization to teach) to about two dozen Dharma Masters (in Korean, Ji Do Poep Sa Nim) spread all over the world: Asia, North America, Europe, and Africa. The Zen masters and dharma masters he has authorized carry out most of the teaching mission of the Kwan Um School of Zen. Master Seung Sahn died on November 30, 2004 at Hwa Gye Sah Temple in Seoul. A short biography of Zen Master Seung Sahn can be found here on the main Kwan Um School of Zen website.
